» Our Mission

To eliminate those parts of Maryland's criminal justice system that perpetuate the cycle of racial injustice and poverty through a five-pronged approach that includes research, communications, public education, organizing and advocacy. Specifically, we seek to remove barriers to reentry for formerly incarcerated people, improve conditions for prisoners and correctional staff and reduce Maryland's reliance on incarceration as a way of improving public safety. To accomplish our mission, we endeavor to build a reputable policy-oriented organization that is driven by best practices, sustained by grassroots leadership development and powered by those most affected by the criminal justice system.

» Our Values

Justice Maryland values accountability without retribution, and seeks to support those laws and policies that hold people accountable in ways that are free from prejudice and discrimination. Justice Maryland also values forgiveness and restoration, and we therefore work to achieve policies that promote fairness, opportunity and self-sufficiency for prisoners, former prisoners, their family members and the victims of the offenders conduct. Finally, Justice Maryland values democracy and the opportunity to participate in the process, and we work faithfully to give voice to and magnify the voices of the most marginalized members of our society. In doing all of this, we labor carefully yet boldly to strike a balance between public safety concerns and the welfare of those caught up in Maryland's justice systems.
